Aaron Rai Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
Aaron Rai displayed exceptional composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a tense playoff after a topsy-turvy final round of play.
The Englishman sank a decisive birdie putt from around eight foot to clinch the win, repeating his sole prior tournament triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff victory over Fleetwood.
Final Round Drama
Rai entered the final round with a one-shot advantage over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 final round that featured seven birdies and two bogeys.
Fleetwood edged one shot ahead with two holes remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the final hole.
Playoff Climax
That set up a playoff at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to take the title and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13m) in prize money.

To compete alongside him the last two days was truly memorable,” said the winner, the current world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s hard to put into words at the present how it is. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”
Notable Performances
Rory McIlroy found himself a bit too far to make up, finishing one shot short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 10-under final round of 62. It was his best-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and an eagle.
The Danish golfer carded six birdie putts of his own, but his hopes of topping the leaderboard were hit by a bogey on the 12th. England’s Richard Mansell produced an excellent last round seven-under to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
