At least 64 individuals lost their lives in a law enforcement action targeting the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the Brazilian state's history.

Four security agents were among those killed during the police action in the neighborhoods of AlemĂŁo and Penha, government representatives said. More than 80 individuals were detained.

Violent conflicts erupted when around 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho reacted using gunfire, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives stated.

The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "shocked" by the security action, urging "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Raid Aftermath

The slum neighborhoods near the city's international airport is regarded as the headquarters of a major criminal organizations.

State officials confirmed no less than 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Many residents were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Community Response

Community members have likened the elevated neighborhood - housing around 300,000 people - to a "battlefield" since the mission commenced.

Roads remain closed throughout the region.

Organized Crime Spread

The criminal network has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, increasing drug trafficking routes and power in the informal settlements.

Security forces said in excess of 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were captured in the raid, in addition to numerous weapons.

Operation Background

The combined action by various security forces follows a year-long investigation.

Dozens of the suspects are thought to be affiliates of a group from the Brazilian state who are presently concealed in the metropolitan area.
