Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated anger after Donald Trump charged a contingent of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and stated they should be taken into custody and punished "with execution" following their release of a disputed video.
The Recording That Provoked the Debate
The video footage, released on Tuesday, features six Democratic elected officials who previously served in defense or security positions.
"Like us, you all swore an vow to defend and support this founding document," the representatives stated in the 90-second video. "And right now, the threats to our constitution are not only from foreign nations, but from right here at home. Our laws are unambiguous, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can refuse improper directives, you should reject unlawful commands. No one has to follow directives that break the legal system or our constitution."
Trump's Furious Response
The video message appeared to trigger a angry reaction from the former president.
On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he declared: "This represents really concerning, and Dangerous to our United States. Their statements cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Officials Respond
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, House Democratic leader released a unified announcement censuring the remarks.
"Political violence has no role in America," they declared. "Congress members who appeared in the video all worked our United States with great patriotism and honor. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful death threats against congressional representatives, and urge GOP representatives to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also said that they had been in communication with security officials "to guarantee the security of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must right away take down these extreme digital publications and recant his aggressive discourse before he leads to violence," the statement stated.
Lawmakers' Firm Response
The lawmakers who appeared in the video also released a statement.
"We are veterans and national security professionals who value this country and took an pledge to safeguard and defend the constitution of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we aim to honor it. No intimidation, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that important responsibility."
"The significant point is that the former president deems it liable to punishment by death for us to repeat the statutes," they stated. "Our service members should recognize that we have their support as they carry out their pledge to the constitution and obligation to follow only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "The entire nation must come together and censure the president's requests for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a moment for moral clarity."
Additional Governmental Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's remarks and shared on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the capital punishment of elected officials."
He continued: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, all citizens – regardless of party – should denounce this right away and without qualification."
The Conservative official defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", labeling the video as "extremely improper", adding: "This represents very harmful, you have prominent officials of Congress advising troops to defy commands, I think that's historic in American history."
The GOP official also according to sources told media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the violation of sedition" but that "attorneys have to examine the terminology and decide all that."
White House Response
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when inquired by a journalist, "Is the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson replied: "No."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the spokesperson said. "There are current representatives of the US Congress who worked together to arrange a video message to members of the national defense, to current military personnel encouraging them to disobey the president's proper directives."
She added: "The purity of our defense system rests on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is violated, it can lead to fatalities, it can lead to chaos, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are essentially encouraging."
