Eurovision Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – However It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Gloss Over Warfare.

A freshly coined term came to light a few months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, per insights from doctors like child health specialists. Normally, it is rare for medical staff to attend to a young patient who has been bereaved of their complete family. But, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been wiped out and the number of children who have lost limbs surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal about numerous doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being systematically aimed at.

An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

The Gaza Strip continues to be hell on earth. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that violations are still being committed. Officials rejects these accusations, consistent with how it denies each claim it is charged with. Yet as young survivors are now enduring frigid conditions in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from advancing its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, apparently, is what international harmony resembles.

Eurovision, of course banned Russia from participating in 2022 over the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.

A Double Standard

Forget the fact that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that settler violence and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Forget the fact that global media are still prevented from unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the current lifespan of a person in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the camp joy it historically embodied. An institution that initially championed togetherness has now become a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
