Gas Detonation Claims 3 Police Officers During Eviction Procedure in the Verona Area

Three members of law enforcement perished and at least 15 others were hurt in what appears to be deliberate detonation from gas at a country home in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The explosion took place as police and firefighters went into the residence near Verona to enforce an eviction order for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three victims who died belonged to the Italian military police.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female got detained at the scene and another man who ran away after the explosion was located not long after. The trio have been admitted to the hospital.

The explosion could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and images from the location revealed the property reduced to a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to remove the three siblings in the past.

Background and Motive

The president of the Veneto area, the regional head, stated the farmhouse was under an removal notice due to debts incurred by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to talk with the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the officers came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the siblings set off the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief the police commander stated to reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the detonation immediately struck our officers,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the property, the interior minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the incident consisted of 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had was without power.

The prosecutor believed the blast had occurred on a story above the access point and told reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the blast, he mentioned personnel had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the propane tanks being opened”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents told local news, adding that the family members had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto united with other government officials in commemorating the three officers who had been killed in the line of duty.
