Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments
New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this Tuesday, responding to latest comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared via social media. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."
The quarterback's response pointed to the infamous bounty scandal controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
During that period, the league found that the Saints had rewarded players for delivering hard hits on rival teams. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the NFL for a full year.
What Sparked the Recent Exchange
Wilson's response came after Payton delivered remarks after the Broncos' historic 33-32 win over the New York. Payton remarked that the team had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Additionally, Payton implied that he had told team owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson instead of Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.
Context of the Coach-QB Relationship
- The quarterback was traded to the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245M extension.
- The Broncos finished 4-11 in his first season before Denver brought in Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a stint in TV commentary.
- Payton benched Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that prevented the player from suffering an injury.
If Wilson remained on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million pay for the following year would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was released, marking the ugly breakup between the quarterback and his mentor.
