Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
At least 16 people lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.
Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the individuals who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the events before the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
